This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in a summer school exchange program in Hong Kong, a city celebrated for its remarkable fusion of history, culture, and modern innovation.
From the moment I arrived, Hong Kong captivated me with its iconic skyline, lively streets, and characteristic vibe. The energetic markets, the striking contrast between contemporary skyscrapers and ancient temples, and the warmth of the locals made the city feel both energetic and inviting. Adapting to the humid summer weather and the fast-paced lifestyle was an adventure in itself, but quickly became part of the appeal of Hong Kong.
The summer school program at Hong Kong Polytechnic University provided a diverse range of subjects. I was lucky to enroll in a course titled Introduction to Space Exploration, which delved into topics like space missions, satellite technology, and the economics of space programs. The lectures were exciting, and I valued how the professors encouraged us to think critically and explore each subject in depth.
Beyond academics, the university organized a variety of extracurricular activities. One of my favorites was a candle-making workshop, along with an excursion to Lantau Island, where we visited the renowned Big Buddha. This experience allowed us to appreciate the island's natural beauty while learning about its cultural significance.
Living in the student dorms was a standout experience during my time there. I shared my room with a student from Mainland China, which led to a vibrant exchange of ideas and cultural perspectives. Our evenings were filled with shared meals and discussions about our diverse customs, turning our living situation into a delightful cultural journey.
When I wasn't attending classes or engaging in workshops, I took every chance to discover the city's remarkable mix of urban life and natural beauty. Hiking the Dragon’s Back trail offered breathtaking views of the coastline, while visits to temples like the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery provided a peaceful escape from the city's fast pace.
No visit to Hong Kong would be complete without indulging in its renowned culinary scene. Dim sum, egg tarts, and a variety of street foods quickly became my daily favorites. In the evenings, I enjoyed walks along the Avenue of Stars, taking in the stunning views of Victoria Harbour, and I always looked forward to uncovering new spots.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my exchange was the friendships I forged. Whether we were studying together, exploring the islands, or enjoying meals at local restaurants, these shared experiences added depth to my summer school adventure.
My time in Hong Kong was more than just an academic exchange; it was a transformative experience that expanded my worldview, enhanced my adaptability, and deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity. The vibrant energy and warm hospitality of Hong Kong will always hold a special place in my heart.
For anyone thinking about joining a summer exchange program, my advice is straightforward: go for it! The experiences, knowledge, and friendships you create will last a lifetime. Hong Kong is waiting for you!

Dear Jenny. So great to read about your experiences in Hong Kong. I am pretty sure that you had a fabulous time in the “fragant harbour” and brought back fond memories back to Switzerland.
