7 Things You Need to Know About Summer Schools

Summer schools offer a unique opportunity to delve into a topic of interest, gain up-to-date insights from renowned lecturers and experts, and connect with like-minded individuals. Beyond that, they provide a chance to explore an exotic or otherwise intriguing destination, with local tips on making the most of your stay. What could possibly go wrong? Not much, to be honest. However, before attending the EurOMA summer school in Cluj (Romania), I wish someone had given me some pointers on what to expect—and what not to expect. So, here’s a list of seven things you need to know when attending a summer school (especially if you are a PhD student).

  1. It's Not Just Another Travel Trip (But Almost)

If you’re expecting an exciting travel experience, you might be a bit disappointed. Summer schools are primarily hard work, with limited leisure time. Nevertheless, you’ll likely find some time to explore, see the sights, and enjoy a drink or two (especially since there’s usually some social programming around the lectures). The caveat is that you must manage your energy, as the full schedule can be exhausting. Still, summer schools offer a great opportunity to visit places you might not otherwise travel to—like Cluj in Romania, for instance.

2. You Get What You Give

No one forces you to participate, concentrate, or even think. However, you chose to attend a summer school, so why not make the most of it? To get the best experience, stay focused, interact, and actively participate.

3. Preparation Isn't Everything

You’ll likely receive a lot of tasks to prepare in advance, and it may be challenging to find the time to complete them all. Don’t panic—many others may be in the same boat. While preparation is important, it’s just one part of the equation. Again, you get out of it what you put in.

4. The Topic Matters (But It’s Not Everything)

Choosing a topic of interest is crucial, but keep in mind that you won’t have complete control over who the lecturers are or what they’ll teach. If you expect to have all your questions answered and to receive every bit of inspiration you’ve been seeking for months, you might be disappointed. Still, you’ll learn a lot from some of the most relevant experts in the field, so make the most of the experience.

5. It’s All About Networking

Summer schools offer a unique opportunity to connect with lecturers and fellow students from various countries. There’s a good chance that lecturers will be able to address some of your most pressing questions, and that your peers will share similar challenges. As a PhD student, you’ll likely encounter these people repeatedly throughout your academic journey. So, take advantage of the time during sessions and outside of them—whether in breaks, social events, or leisure time—and perhaps even form lifelong friendships.

6. Be Open-Minded on All Levels

What could that mean, possibly? Well, not everyone operates on "Swiss time." So if you’re used to strict punctuality, be prepared to wait for others who may follow different cultural norms regarding time. Additionally, your destination might not fully match the lifestyle standards you’re accustomed to, or you might not find your favorite breakfast meal readily available. Staying flexible and being easygoing will go a long way. Remember to be a good guest.

7. Secure Your Caffeine Supply

Lastly, summer schools can be some of the most exhausting and intense experiences you’ll ever have. The days are packed with lectures, activities, and networking, leaving little time to relax. Ensuring you have a steady supply of caffeine might be the key to surviving the week.
